Christmas Crafts | Candle Making For Christmas Gifts
If you think that making candles at Christmas time and using them for decoration or giving them away as gifts is too difficult to bother with, then you need to think again and maybe redefine your “candle scope”.
When you think of Christmas wine candles, a typical candlestick might come to mind but as a matter of fact most holiday candles are the type that are encased in glass, or are larger and more decorative than the candlestick variety.
For instance, when I was a child my mom used to make Christmas candles using small paraffin wax slabs intended for canning. She used to take about 8 to ten of these wax pieces and “glue” them together (running a wick up the middle) using a small amount of melted wax, then decorate them by spreading colored wax on them with a butter knife.
If wax slabs don’t pique your interest, you can always pour colored and/or scented wax around a wick that’s suspended in any sort of decorative jar that you can buy pre-decorated or hand paint yourself.
A couple of things you want to take into consideration when making Christmas candles or any candles is to always use a double boiler to minimize the possibility of fire, and never add any water-based scents or dyes to your wax (oil or wax based scents and colors only).
Because you want to make your Christmas gift baskets making experience a good one, always remember that safety is a priority and keep your workin wax temperature within the range of recommended melting points, which will vary from 129 to 139 degrees Fahrenheit depending on the type of wax being used.
